Mentoring & Counseling

Though we do counseling, Ruthie and I see ourselves more as mentors. We prefer to walk with those we are in relationship with. Relational mentoring and counseling is a huge part of what we do. There is an aspect of professional counseling that has a specific charge, and we charge for premarital counseling, but much of our walking with people—counseling and mentoring—cannot be monetized. But we do ask that those we mentor take into consideration that our mentoring ministry is our career, and, according to I Corinthians 9, to biblically and responsibly contribute financially to our ministry. Ways to do that are listed in the DONATE section of this website.

The primary mentoring focus is our calling to walk with leaders and upcoming leaders. Many leaders have no one to speak into their lives. Sometimes leaders feel like giving machines—who will speak into our lives? This is a primary place Ruthie and I desire to be—counselors to counselors, pastors to pastors, leaders to leaders.

Pre-Marital Counseling

A text to Bruce from Brent: “Hey, Seina and I are going through a major issue that we need help with. Would you and Ruthie have time to give us some wisdom in how to resolve this problem we are having?”

That text came from a couple that went through our pre-marital sessions 4 years ago.

A few things about our pre-marital counseling to remember:

Though Ruthie and I have an agenda for what needs to be taught in pre-marital counseling, for the most part, our agenda is to be personal with the engaged couple. I often say that our pre-marital counseling is customized to the couple we are counseling.

We plan four pre-marital sessions lasting 75-90 minutes apiece, usually at our home.

The fifth session occurs six months after they get married. We ask the couple to invite us to your home for a meal, and then Ruthie and I have a follow-up session with them to make sure things are going well.

Pre-marital counseling is a commitment involving much more than what happens in the five sessions. Therefore we ask for a minimum of a $350 donation to Leadership Foundation to cover a portion of the time Ruthie and I pour into your marriage. I don’t care how this contribution arrives—giving monthly for a season or giving one or more of your tithes (since I Corinthians 9 says that those who give spiritually are worthy of receiving financially).

Ruthie and I do not do pre-marital to just anybody. We only accept couples who we believe are dedicated to having a Kingdom Marriage more than just a happy marriage. Ruthie and I believe that a Kingdom Marriage is the pathway to a happy and fulfilling marriage!
