Overcoming Addiction: A Different Kind of Treadmill

Treadmilling is the act of exerting lots of energy and ending up the same place you began. The best way to treadmill in your battle over pornography or other types of addiction is to try to control the addiction on the surface. Simply, for the most part, trying to fight sexual dependency by exerting more of your will, to change more of your behavior, will only make the problem worse, or drive you crazy.

As I wrote in my recent book written from a Christian perspective, To Kill a Lion,Overcoming the Power of Lust at the Root, the process of overcoming sexual addiction involves breaking into the control room where sexual lust is conceived, and correcting the root problems.

How Not to Overcome Addiction
While driving down the road, you notice your “Check Engine” light comes on in your car. You pull into the shop and summon your mechanic to check out your car. You point out the warning light, to which your mechanic responds, “I can fix that!” He goes back into the shop and comes out with a hammer and a small spike. He proceeds to destroy the light in the dash. “There, that’ll do it!” You give him five bucks and drive away thinking your problem is resolved.

That’s an extreme illustration, but in the same way, you can’t take a hammer and spike to your “Addiction” light. You’ve got to find out the ROOT PROBLEMS! Many contemporary counselors will not use the term “recovered” because they believe once an addict, always an addict. If one is going to try to resolve his addiction by modifying his behavior on the surface, then, yes, “recovering” is as far as you will get. But God offers more than that. Jesus said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed (John 8:32, 36).”

During this season, you have the opportunity to discover the root of your addiction. There is help for you. You are not alone. Find a trusted counselor, leader, or friend. Read my book, To Kill a Lion, as as a tool to discovering the root of your addiction. You don't deserve to waste a single more moment of your life treadmilling.
