In the past, we explored the Enemy’s schemes to steal people’s identity. Now, let’s discover how you can take your identity back, and find a wholesome self-worth, so you can live loved. Discovering your identity will change everything about your life. In order to pave the pathway for self-worth, it is helpful to go through the break and make process.
Break means that you must break your agreement with the lies and expectations of the Enemy. Break is simply another word for repent. True repentance is the pathway to freedom and a healthy identity. The root word in Greek in the Bible is metanoia. The word simply means to change your mind.
Too often repentance has been defined as some morbid conjuring up of sorrow, tears, or emotional regret. This is so far from the truth! Yes, it can be healthy to feel sorrow at times when you repent, but true repentance comes from going beyond the sorrow and making a choice to follow God’s voice
What validates repentance is when you change your mind. That is, you go from believing what Satan has said to replacing it with what God says. In other words, you change your mind from believing the lie to believing the truth—break and make. An older minister recently commented after my teaching on repentance that he viewed repentance as the pathway from what we are by nature, to what we can be, by God’s grace.
In the previous article we talked about four schemes Satan uses to steal your identity: speaking hurtful words, promoting false images, exploiting extreme abilities, and blocking God’s promises. Let’s apply break and make to those areas and get free!
Overcoming Hurtful Words
Make a list of all the devaluing and abusive words people have spoken over you, which you allowed to be planted in your heart. One-by-one, verbally break your agreement with these words. Call them what they are— lies. Uproot them from your core belief system. Tell Satan, you don’t believe those declarations over you anymore. Don’t let one of them remain. Even if you believe the word spoken over you was true, ask yourself if it was said with a loving heart, desirous to make you a better person. The word may have been true, but if it was spoken abusively, it may have taken root in your heart and altered you in a destructive way. Make: Begin to confess what God says about you. You are forgiven, valued, justified, a son or daughter of God, no longer of this world, a new creature in Christ Jesus!
Overcoming False Images
We are bombarded with all kinds of false images on a daily basis. These images tell us what is good, what is beautiful, which products to use, clothes to wear, and on, and on! Declare war on the lust, or obsession, with your image. Break the agreement with performance and superficial counterfeits. No, I’m not promoting being out-of-style or sloppy-ugly. But I encourage you to learn the psychology of exploitation and brainwashing in advertising. No, you aren’t any better if you drive a certain car, or more popular because of the beer you drink, neither will you become like the sexy model on the billboard ad because you chew a certain gum. A product isn’t better because an NFL star endorses it. I would enjoy hearing you say, while viewing an advertisement in a magazine, Are you kidding, they expect me to be swayed by THAT? Break your agreement—declare war! Let the Word of God and the heart of God become the model for your standards and what you make agreements with on a daily basis.
Exploiting Extreme Abilities
There is nothing wrong being good or even great at something. However, today, let’sbreak any kind of agreement that requires you to achieve some illusive high standard. Strive to be the best you can be, and don’t let that YouTube video of the prodigy keep you from being great in your own way. Then, after you break your agreements with the Enemy, make your agreements with God by thanking Him for your talents. Ask Him to help you use them the best you know how.
Blocking God’s Promises
Study the promises of God in the Bible that define your identity. This is a journey, but whenever you discover something that has to do with God’s covenant to his children, break your agreement with the false belief, and receive (make) God’s declaration for you into your heart.
If you have never renewed your mind, from Satan’s tactics against you to God’s promises for you, I guarantee that when you do, your life will change.Repentance--breaking and making--is a way of life, even a pathway to freedom. Whenever you are tempted to fear, worry, wallow in rejection, or anything else that opposes God's promises to you, simply "catch" the temptation, break your agreement with it, and reestablish your heart by agreeing with the power and love of God. May God bless you as you align yourself God's wonderful covenant!
